The Call That Made My Day

September 06, 20242 min read

I was sitting at my desk, calling prospective clients and a gentleman from North Carolina answered the phone. Here is how the conversation went:

Me: “Hey Mike, how are you?”

Mike: “Fine, I don’t want what you are selling.”

Me: laughing “Mike, you don’t even know if I am selling anything. I could also have a million dollars for you! So, how are you?”

Mike: “Do you have a million dollars for me?”

Me: If I had a million dollars for you, do you really think I would be calling you on the phone to tell you?”

Mike: “No, probably not.”

Me: “Exactly, but I do have an opportunity for you to protect yourself. I saw you were looking at health insurance online. What’s going on?”

Mike: “Yeah, I was looking at my options. I got kicked off Medicaid.”

Me: Mike, this is a blessing! You are on the come up and that is something to be celebrated.”

Mike: laughing “I guess, I mean, making more money is great.”

Me: “So, let’s get into your options.

After this initial exchange, we both let our guard down. I was able to find a policy for him that met his needs and at the end of the call, he said, “Your accent is so sweet. Thank you for helping me today.” I said, “It was my pleasure.”

The reason this call made my day: Mike was frustrated because he was receiving one call after the other and no one took the time to talk with him and make him feel human. No one explained all of his options, they just wanted to get him on something as quickly as possible. I was able to soften him up so the idea of health insurance stopped being overwhelming and became informative. I felt validated in my decision to leave a career of 20+ years to help people. I keep Mike in my mind when things are slow to prove to myself that I’ve got this!
